“And take that insolent look off your face – or I’ll do it for you”.  He had a perfect method for doing that – worked every time.

Our Judge Jeffries was not noted for hanging but for giving fathers the right to spank their seventeen year old daughters.  The previously referenced article is found in the second column regarding the judge’s precedent setting ruling.  I wonder how many girls suffered moderate spankings on account of  his jurisprudence.

What a delicious story!  I liked the journalist’s observation that the shanking would have been more effective if it had been started at seven instead of waiting till seventeen!

Or as Voltaire wrote in his wonderful book Candide: “… dans ce pays-ci, il est bon de tuer de temps en temps un amiral pour encourager les autres.”  In this country it is good to execute an Admiral from time to time, to encourage the others.

My Housemaster abhorred idleness, often quoting the old proverb that ‘idle hands are the devil’s tools’ and assuming that a boy who appeared to be doing absolutely nothing was in fact concealing some unseen devilment which required investigation and as like as not, a visit to his study where the cane would yield a confession followed by punishment. Any anguished protest that the boy had not done anything wrong was met with his other favourite quotation – the notorious Judge Jeffries when faced with a ne’er-do-well on whom no specific change could be pinned – “He’ll be none the worse for a good hanging”.

Of course, my Voltaire quote was in answer to negasman‘s post #790 on the previous page extracted here.  Sorry I forgot to put in the original.

Writing Candide at the very time, he must have been thinking of Admiral Byng’s unfortunate demise.  A classic example of a man promoted too far, too fast.

‘Encourager des autres’ was very much our housemaster’s guiding principle.  When he subjected a persistent offender to his much feared ‘House caning’ he made sure that the youngest boys were right at the front where they would miss nothing…

Good to see you posting.  However I am concerned that your usually inexhaustible supply of tram pictures may have been depleted for some reason as we’ve already had that one recently in your contribution  here  and I responded with my ever so slightly modified version in  this post.

However, rest assured that insofar as I am concerned you have absolutely no need to post pictures of trams or resort to quotations to establish your credentials as a contributor who should not be idly gainsaid!

A_L, I’m sure that Alan Turing and other tram enthusiasts will enjoy this trip down memory lane. Old fogies like yours truly, who remember BBC radio programmes from the 1950s such as Dick Barton and Paul Temple will also enjoy the backing music.
